It’s located where the rear legs, hips, and buttocks of the cow are. This area is called the round primal. The bottom round steak is cut from the bottom roast, which is where the center of the round primal is.

So, on to the original question. What is it good for? Well, this specific cut of meat is good for pretty much any recipe you can have steak in.

It is very affordable and commonly found in grocery stores and quite a few restaurants as well. However, not many people know about it, it is usually overshadowed by the more popular steak cuts.

One of the best ways to cook a bottom-round steak is by braising it as stated above. There are plenty of other ways that leave you with a mouthwatering piece of meat. You can grill them, cook them on the stovetop or oven, and slow cook them.

Slow cooking is the second best way and you can do this by using a crockpot or an instant pot. Your steak will cook the entire day soaking in whatever you chose to marinate with, and if there are veggies, it’ll soak up some of that flavor along with the sauce.

Is Bottom-Round Steak A Good Cut Of Meat?

This question is honestly one that has an answer that could be biased. A lot of the sources however claim that this isn’t a super great cut. Though this cut is cheaper than the rest, it is tough and chewy if it isn’t prepared correctly.

Now if you are on a budget or maybe you want to save a little on dinner, this is an amazing choice. There are so many different types of recipes that you can use to make sure that this specific cut tastes fantastic and is nice and juicy.

The Different Round Steak Cuts

There are three different cuts of round steak. There is the top round steak, the bottom round steak we are already covering, and the eye of round steak.

The top round steak is a versatile meat that can be cooked either thick sliced or thin sliced. This cut is very lean and tasty, it even has enough taste for even the steak eaters that like it pink or bloody.

The next cut is called the eye of round steak. Remember when it was mentioned that the round steaks are found above the hind legs and the buttocks? Well, the eye-round steak is cut from the hindquarters. This is the cut that is usually made into ground beef or even popularly made in stews.

You can find countless recipes for both of these cuts. These are very popular and very well-known cuts of meat.

You can make your steak tender by using the back of a knife or a meat tenderizer. With these, you will need to use brute force to make sure that it is getting tender and you aren’t thinking you are when you are not.

A couple of things you can use to help tenderize your steak are rubbing it in salt then using your mallet, or pouring a tenderizing marinade on it.

You should use your mallet no matter what because this is meant to make the meat softer and tender so you can cook and consume it easier.

How Can I Tenderize Steak Quickly?

The fastest way you can tenderize your steak, let alone any other meat that needs tenderizing, is by putting the meat on a cutting board, or with wax or plastic wrap before smashing it. This way you can protect your counter.

Since tenderizing your steak to the fullest can take a while, doing it this way will save you so much time and energy, especially when you are in a hurry. However, if you aren’t in a hurry, it would pay off, in the end, to make sure that you have done the tenderizing part thoroughly.
