1. Pumpkin Face Platter

What You Will Need: Baby carrots, black olives, cucumbers, and ranch dip

Not every DIY themed platter design has to be complicated. This pumpkin face platter should do the trick by adding character to your Halloween presentation. Start by layering the base of the plate with baby carrots. Fill up the entire platter with carrots to create a round pumpkin shape.

Use a handful of black olives to create a round-shaped nose. Shape the lips into a smile using the sliced cucumbers. Finish up the presentation with two small cups filled with ranch dip as the eyes.

2. Ghost Crostini

What You Will Need: French baguette, pesto sauce, Roma or cherry tomato, mozzarella, and toasted black sesame seeds.

These open sandwiches make for perfect finger foods for a gathering, as starters or snacks. To make these delicious mini open-faced sandwiches, cut up a French baguette into small slices and lightly toast them.

Next, slather each slice with pesto sauce and top them with a slice of Roma tomatoes or cherry tomatoes and a ghost-carved mozzarella with toasted black sesame seeds serving as the eyes and nose.

3. Lady Bug Canapes

What You Will Need: Salt crackers, cream cheese, red cherry tomatoes, pitted black olives, black food coloring, balsamic glaze, or toasted black sesame seeds, and sweet basil

This Halloween-inspired approach to a classic cracker and cream cheese canape offers a visually appetizing and equally filling appetizer and snack. Start by spreading the cracker with cream cheese.

Build the ladybug’s rear side using two pieces of quartered red cherry tomatoes. Finish off with a sliced pitted black olive to form the head. Use black food coloring, balsamic glaze, or toasted black sesame seeds for the signature ladybug spots. Lastly, sprinkle each canapé with thinly chopped sweet basil and serve.

4. Pretzel Witch Broomsticks

What You Will Need: Long pretzel sticks, orange bell peppers, mozzarella cheese, and chives

This healthy finger food combines a versatile mix of flavors and textures that make for a fun and filling snack. Use a long pretzel stick as the broom handle and orange bell peppers and mozzarella cheese as broom heads. Attach the “broom heads” to the handle using thinly sliced chive “twine”. Once done, enjoy the nutty, crunchy pretzel handle with the refreshing and soft cheese-pepper bite.

5. Frankenstein Dip and Veggie Tray

What You Will Need: Guacamole or hummus, long pretzel sticks, pitted black olives, carrots, red bell pepper, cucumber, balsamic vinegar, and celery.

Nothing screams Halloween like Frankenstein! To build this work of art, start by layering the platter with guacamole or hummus (or better yet, craft two platters each with its own dip) into a rectangular shape. This shape mimics Frankenstein’s head and is molded in the same portrait orientation as the tray itself.

Next, attach long pretzel sticks to either near bottom ends of Frankenstein’s head. Cap the pretzel ends on each side with a pitted olive. The olive-capped pretzels represent the signature 1930s electrode bolts Frankenstein would have. Use thinly curled carrots as curly hair and red pepper slices on either side of the head as the ears.

Finish off with the face using a cucumber slice topped with a black pitted olive on either side as the eyes,  and the end of a cucumber as the nose. Then, drizzle a thick balsamic glaze to shape Frankenstein’s crooked smile, unibrow, and a recognizable scar above the brows. To complete the platter, add your favorite thinly sliced veggies, such as carrots, celery, peppers, and cucumbers.

6. Colorful Party Halloween Veggie Trays

What You will Need: Baby carrots, cucumbers, celery sticks, cherry tomatoes, black olives, bell peppers (orange and yellow), cauliflower florets, green Goddess dip or guacamole

These low-effort yet colorful Halloween veggie trays with dips are perfect for a more illustrious presentation. Like most party platters, this one combines a mix of healthy and bright vegetables, paired with an equally delicious green Goddess or guacamole dip.

The best part is you get to craft your own choice of green Goddess vegetable dip or stick to a traditional guac. Carve your cucumbers into a ghost-like look using a V-cut knife, and pair your black olives with small food-grade spider cauldrons for the final finish.

7. Jack-O-Lantern Stuffed Bell Peppers

What You Will Need: Yellow bell peppers, a variety of veggies, fruits, nuts, cheese, and dressing (optional)

Whether a snack or after-meal dessert, these Jack-O-Lantern pepper cups are versatile and appeal to a variety of palates. Use a V-Cut knife to carve a large yellow bell pepper into a jack-o-lantern. Fill them up with your favorite fruit, veggie, cheese, and nut combination and serve them on a large platter for your guests to choose.

The best part about this serving is that each pepper cup is filled with a unique combination. This, in turn, adds to the charm and mystery of what each diner will end up with.

Some fun combinations include;

  • Cucumbers, raspberries, cheddar cubes, and toasted pistachios
  • Cucumbers, blueberries, crumbled feta, sliced almonds, and fresh mint leaves tossed with some honey, olive oil, and lemon juice
  • Roasted butternut squash cubes, apple slices, toasted pecans, and crumbled goat cheese
  • Broccoli florets, shredded carrots, red bell pepper slices, dried cranberries, and cubed cheddar lightly tossed in vinaigrette dressing.

8. Creepy Crudité Platter with Fancy Dip

What You will Need: Homemade Dijon tarragon dip, blanched purple carrots, broccolini, asparagus, haricot verts, steamed paprika potatoes, soft-boiled eggs, English cucumbers, and various greens (radicchio, leaf lettuce, soft lettuce).

This crudité platter can serve as a meal side or a starter for when you want to impress guests. With a veggie combination prepared in various styles and a fancy dip tying them all together, this platter promises to offer sophisticated flavor and texture contrast.

Start with a homemade Dijon tarragon dip in a casket-shaped cup and place the center of the platter for that elegant scare! Then, layer around the sauce cup, blanched purple carrots, broccolini, asparagus, haricot verts, steamed paprika potatoes, soft-boiled eggs, English cucumbers, and various greens.

9. Spooky Skull Carved Roasted Vegetables

What You Will Need: Carrots with their tops intact, olive oil, balsamic vinegar, honey, salt, and freshly crushed black peppercorns

Who said you can’t be fancy with Halloween platters? This roasted skull-carved carrot recipe adds flavor depth to your dinner feast. While the recipe features a few simple steps, it does require some skill. Thankfully, you need carving skills and not complex culinary skills!

To create this recipe, start by hand-carving each carrot to resemble a skull. Then, combine olive oil, balsamic vinegar, honey, and a pinch of salt and pepper in a large bowl to make at least a cup of the sauce. Toss this sauce with the carved carrots, drain the carrots from the sauce, and roast in the oven at 400 degrees Fahrenheit for about 30 to 35 minutes, occasionally tossing the carrots until tender.

Meanwhile, gently heat the remaining sauce on low heat until heavy but not boiling. Remove from the oven, layer the carrots on the serving platter, and drizzle over the remaining sauce. Bonus points – The darkened, heavy sauce will mimic blood!

10. “Ssslithering” Asian Cucumber Salad

What You Will Need: Cucumbers (Japanese, English, Persian, or pickling), Jin Korean soy sauce or regular light soy sauce, rice vinegar, sugar, Korean red chili powder, toasted black sesame seeds, and green onions

Ditch the boring sliced cucumber salad for a more dramatic snake-style spiral presentation. Even better, the Korean sauce tossed with the cucumbers makes this recipe worth the effort thanks to its refreshingly sweet umami flavor profile.

Choose a large cucumber and slice it halfway to create spirals. Repeat this step for 2 additional cucumbers(or more), depending on how long you want the cucumber to be. In a separate large bowl, combine soy sauce, vinegar, sugar, red chili, sesame seeds, and green onions. Toss the cucumber and thoroughly coat it with the sauce.

Use wooden skewer sticks to connect the ends of the cucumbers to form a long “snake”. Layer them on the platter and use a pinch of sesame seeds to model the snake eyes. Use a small piece of the skewer stick to model the snake’s tongue and drizzle the remaining sauce all over the “cucumber snake” and serve!

11. Skull-Carved Mozarella Caprese Salad

What You Will Need: Mozzarella, yellow and red cherry tomatoes, sweet basil, salt, and olive oil

This classic salad combines sliced mozzarella, tomatoes, and sweet basil tossed with salt and olive oil. With its colors reflecting the Italian flag, this appetizer cum side salad, or snack adds color to the table.

Elevate it into a Halloween must-have using a V-Cut knife to carve the mozzarella into skulls for that spooky spirit, and add even more color by replacing Roma tomatoes with red and yellow cherry tomatoes.

12. “ColorBoo” Pasta Salad

What You Will Need: Fusilli, beets, sweet corn, red, green, and yellow bell peppers, mozzarella, cucumbers, cheese, red wine vinegar, olive oil, salt, pepper, and oregano.

This colorful pasta salad appeals to both adults and young ones alike. The best part of this dish is that you can take any “Spooky” approach you want. For instance, boil the pasta with beets to give it the signature bright pink color.

In a separate bowl, combine thinly sliced beets with sweet corn, cubed red, green, and yellow bell peppers for more color, texture, crunch, and sweetness. Next, make mozzarella eyeballs by inserting mozzarella rounds with sliced pimento olives. Lastly, use a V-cut knife to carve cucumbers and cheese slices into ghost shapes.

Toss the pasta and veggies with red wine vinegar, olive oil, salt, pepper, and oregano, and serve on a platter topped with ghost-shaped and carved cheeses.

13. Ghostly Caesar Salad

What You Will Need:  Romaine lettuce, toasted croutons, parmesan, Caesar dressing, and mozzarella (optional)

A crowd pleaser, Caesar salad grows well with most occasions – brunch, light lunch, dinner side, appetizer, or a snack, you name it! This Halloween, how about you evoke some laughter with humorous Halloween-themed ingredients in your Caesar salad?

Start by crafting your standard ingredients: romaine lettuce, croutons, shaved parmesan, and Caesar dressing. Then, add the spooky characters to the mix, start with a few ghost-carved roasted croutons and “B-O-O” carved parmesan cheese piece.

Note: If you find Parmesan cheese a little too brittle to carve, consider opting for a slightly softer option, such as mozzarella. This won’t affect the overall salad flavor since you’ve already added the shaved Parmesan.

14. Hasselback Potato Bug Halloween Veggie Tray

What You Will Need: Hasselback potatoes, spices of your choice, carrots, yellow and red sweet peppers, butter, and sour cream.

This recipe offers crunchy on the outside and soft, creamy on the inside oven-backed hasselback potatoes lightly coated with spices, sliced to form a spiraled body, and fitted with charred, thinly sliced carrots to mimic bug legs. The potatoes are paired with colorful, sweet peppers and carrots to contrast the dark, “scary” charred potato bug look against the bright and refreshing veggies.

This presentation is reflected further in the pleasantly contrasting textures and tastes of this side potato and veggie dish. Don’t forget to lightly brush the potatoes with butter and sour cream for the ultimate bite.
