We all enjoy a good toast in the morning with a sweet fruity marmalade on top. Or just a good old peanut butter sandwich and a marmalade of course.

If you go to the supermarket there are rows of marmalade and jelly with many different fruit tastes that we all enjoy. Actually one of the most used marmalades that is used is the one made from oranges.

With that specific orange taste, this marmalade can be used in many recipes, from cakes to an ingredient of sauces or similar. However, what if the recipe requires orange marmalade and you are out of? You have other fruity marmalades on your shelves but no orange.  Can something else be used instead?

1. Orange Zest

This is part of the outer side of the orange. It still has the taste of orange so it can be used as a substitute for the marmalade in recipes. But keep in mind that the marmalade has an intense orange flavour and taste of bitterness. The zest can specify the intensity of the orange taste and can bring out the bitterness that the marmalade offers. If you are baking, remember that you don’t always need to have the same flavour.

This is a marmalade that can be used in many sauces and marinades and it can implicate the orange taste. The marmalade is really sweet and with just a few adjustments can be fit in your recipe.  Add a little bit of lemon juice to cut the sweetness of the marmalade. Use it for anything except baking.

Another orange taste substitute is of course the juice. It can work and fit in your recipe but it can have an impact on the texture of your dish so make sure not to overuse.

This is recommended for sauces but not for baking.

Homemade Orange Marmalade Recipe

Well, orange marmalade is one of the best ingredients that we can have in our kitchen. However, what if you can’t find it in your local market, can you make it at home?

Read below, as you’ll find the best home-made orange marmalade, which will satisfy and fill all your recipes and make them even better.

Since it is almost fall season, the time of oranges, you can pick up an abundance of them and use them to make a good marmalade at home. The sweet orange marmalade has a hint of bitterness and has low sugar.

The biggest advantage of making it at home is that you know the ingredients that you are putting in. And also, the feeling when it is freshly done, still hot to put it on a piece of bread and eat it right away.

For preparing the oranges it does not take a lot of effort even though it can be challenging, peeling off the oranges. All you need is:

  • ¾ pounds of oranges or 4 to 5 medium ones
  • 1 lemon zest that is finely grated and juices
  • 6 cups of water
  • 3 pounds and add 12 ounces of sugar

Process:

  • Wash the oranges and the lemon very carefully. Then, cut the oranges into slices and remove the seeds as well. Place the cuts of the oranges into a stainless steel pot. Then, add the lemon zest and the juice. After this add the water to the pot and set it to high heat and bring it to boil for about 10 minutes. Once the mixture starts boiling you should reduce the heat and simmer frequently for about 40 more minutes until the fruit gets really soft.
  • During the time that the fruit is cooking, use a large pot to fill it with water and set it over high heat and bring it to boil. Add jars and rings, canning funnel, ladle and tongs and make sure that the water covers them. Boil for 10 minutes and then turn off the heat and leave everything inside the pot until the marmalade is ready.
  • Then, you should add sugar into the fruit mixture and stir until there is a darker colour for at least 15 to 20 minutes. Adjust the heat so it won’t overboil.  The mixture should be like a gentle soft gel.
  • Remove the jars from the water and drain them with a clean towel. Then, you can add the mixture inside the jars until all is put away. After you are done, put the jars into the boiling water. Add additional water if it is necessary and boil for another 10 minutes. When you are finished, just leave them in a dry place and let them sit at room temperature. Once you open the jar, place it in the fridge.
